Caring for elder orphans

There are more and more people aging alone, referred as elder orphans. These people have no spouse, no children, and sometime no close family members to rely on for any assistance. Given that the traditional practice of extended family members proving care to elderly is ineffective or unreliable due mainly to their poverty status, the well-being of the elderly is a growing social and public health issue.

The objective of this program is to provide basic needs to elder orphans for best possible health and well-being. This program emphasizes on:

  • Assisting with basic needs, including healthy meals, clean water, and clothing and medical care.
  • Reducing social isolation and loneliness by allocating visitor volunteers for socializing and assisting with household chores and personal hygiene.
  • Addressing medical needs during hospital stay, including: (1) providing free healthy meals, and clean clothing, bedding, and towels; (2) paying hospital bills and prescription drugs; and (3) assigning follow-up home care by nurses.
